Dogs Trust West Calder is celebrating the extraordinary dedication of two volunteers who have fostered over 200 rescue dogs since 2016.

Roy and Laura Johnston (pictured), a compassionate couple from Livingston, began their journey into fostering with a single Shih Tzu named Poppy. Their commitment has since blossomed into a heartfelt mission, welcoming dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds into their home.

As foster carers, Roy and Laura have provided temporary care for dogs in need, helping them adjust to home life until they find their forever families. Their nurturing home has been a haven for playful puppies and nervous dogs alike, offering love and stability that many of these animals have never known.

“Fostering is incredibly rewarding,” said the Johnstons. “Watching each dog’s confidence grow day by day is amazing. To anyone considering becoming a foster carer, we would say – go for it!”

Their dedication doesn’t stop at fostering. Over the years, Roy and Laura have adopted five dogs from the charity, including two Shih Tzus, a Dachshund, and a French Bulldog, creating a lively and loving furry family.

Kim McNeill, Assistant Manager Administration at Dogs Trust West Calder, praised the couple’s unwavering commitment: “For some of our dogs, kennel life is not best suited to their needs, and this is when we turn to our incredible foster carers for help. The dedication of our volunteer foster carers is exemplified by the extraordinary efforts of our longest-term foster carers, Roy and Laura Johnston. We are thrilled that their journey with us has reached the amazing milestone of caring for 200 dogs.”

McNeill added, “Their commitment extends beyond providing temporary shelter. They go the extra mile to ensure that every dog is well-prepared for their permanent new home when the time comes. This includes providing socialisation, basic training and unconditional love. Their efforts not only transform the lives of the dogs they foster but also enrich the lives of the families who adopt them.”
