RSPCA staff are making an urgent appeal for a permanent foster home for Mia, an eight-year-old Collie-cross, who has been waiting in kennels for over 18 months due to an irreparable leg injury.
Mia’s story began in Cyprus, where she was hit by a car, resulting in a broken leg that was never treated. She was rescued by another charity and brought to the UK, eventually arriving at the RSPCA’s Mount Noddy Animal Centre in Chichester in March 2023, after moving from another rescue centre.
For the past 18 months, Mia has patiently waited for a permanent home. Centre Manager, Susan Botherway, shared more about Mia’s condition:
“When Mia was in Cyprus, we understand she broke her leg – probably being hit by a car – and it was never treated, so it has never healed properly. This means she struggles with it sometimes, and unfortunately, her leg is deteriorating.”
Susan emphasised the urgency of finding a home for Mia: “That’s why we’re searching for a permanent foster home – someone who can give her the love she deserves in a home environment while we continue to cover the costs of her pain relief to manage her leg.”
The team at Mount Noddy is seeking a foster home within the local area, allowing the branch to continue supporting her care. Mia would thrive as the only pet, and she’ll enjoy spending lots of time with her new family.
“Mia is a really friendly girl who absolutely loves fuss. She’s been reserved multiple times but, sadly, has always been let down at the last moment, and we’re so desperate to get her into a home,” said Susan.
“Mia can sometimes bark at new people, but she just wants to be your best friend. Once she knows and trusts you, she’ll curl up for cuddles. She’s just chatty! She’s a gentle, calm dog who would suit a home in a quiet area. While she’s friendly with other dogs, she does sometimes bark at them.”
Due to her leg condition, Mia enjoys short, slow walks but may struggle at times. Unfortunately, she is not a candidate for surgery, so the RSPCA has been managing her pain and mobility. Her future foster home would need to allow her to enjoy easy strolls and play scentwork games in the garden, a pastime she loves.
“We have to limit the amount of exercise Mia can enjoy,” Susan explained. “Instead of long walks, we play fun scentwork games with her to keep her busy. She’s a clever girl and really enjoys sniffing out her toys and playing different games for her favourite treats.”
